ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's push from 'assistant that answers' to 'agent that finishes.' Launched July 9, 2026 and powered by the GPT-5.6 Sol model, it operates inside ChatGPT: connect your apps, describe an outcome — a market report, a slide deck, a coded prototype, a scheduled workflow — and the agent gathers context across those apps, decomposes the goal into steps, and executes them to a finished artifact. The pitch is end-to-end completion rather than a chat transcript you have to assemble yourself. Because it lives inside ChatGPT, distribution is its moat: it inherits ChatGPT's hundreds of millions of users, its connector ecosystem, and its mobile/desktop apps with no new tool to adopt. The trade-offs mirror the platform: it is only as capable as its app integrations allow, it is gated by ChatGPT plan limits rather than a per-task price, and workloads with strict data boundaries still need the Enterprise tier.
